Whatever dismay there is right now will pass when global stock markets improve. Also, for those who still might want a guaranteed rate of return in their 401Ks, they can always buy treasuries.

Considering the flexibility and the portability of 401Ks, it would be foolish, I think, to revert back to the old defined benefit approach. Moreso, when history has shown us how many companies fail to fully fund their defined benefit employee plans and how many have utterly failed through the years, which forced the government to make good on those pension guarantees.
