New polls show Obama way up, Palin way down
11/3
By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Two new polls indicate Barack Obama is cruising to victory Tuesday, thanks partly to America's negative impressions of Sarah Palin.

These results are in line with what many people have said for months: Obama is better liked generally than John McCain.

Plus, Palin has done little on the campaign stump to make Americans think she would make a good vice president.

In one CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll:

-- Two thirds say Obama cares about people like them, but just over half say the same thing of McCain.

-- Almost 60 percent say Obama will create change in Washington, while nearly 60 percent say McCain won't. And that's not a good thing in this election, when people are looking for dramatic changes in how this nation is governed.

In the other CNN survey:

-- 57 percent said Palin was not personally qualified to be president, up from 49 percent two months ago.

-- The most interesting fact: Joe Biden would beat Palin in a separate vote for vice president, a total turnaround from early September.

-- Finally, the poll showed that McCain, by himself, would trail Obama by just 4 percentage points if Palin were not on the ticket. As it is, McCain is behind by 6 percentage points.

Conclusion: McCain is worse off with Palin on his ticket.
