I bought a Mazda Navajo instead of a Ford Explorer because the Ford salesmen were pricks -- all men, all interested ONLY if I'd buy right that second. When I said that I was looking today with a plan to buy within two weeks, they all literally turned their backs and walked away. I couldn't believe the difference at the Mazda dealership up the street a couple blocks where they just poked heads out of offices and said to have fun looking around and let them know what I needed.

I'm sure it varies considerably by dealership, but I think in general, there is too large a premium placed on short term thinkers, like the next two hours.

My favorite car buying moment ever was when two dealers lied to my dad (I was helping him out) about another party very interested in the car we were looking at, making a reference to what they'd seen on the "big board" and I poked my head into the car we were looking at, noted the mileage (my dad got the number the day before) and then told them, "Those other people can't be *that* interested..." They froze and asked, "What do you mean?" I replied, "They haven't even driven the car 1 mile yet..." And they looked a tad sheepish and slinked inside.

I despise those salespeople so much that my 1998 purchase was done by FAX and my Dec '07 purchase from Toyota was agreed upon by e-mail, only $500 over dealer cost. I probably could do even better today.
