That's fine for athletes. For a 74-year-old "old fart," it's too much bother.

No, that's actually target for normal people. Athletes, especially body builders (males) get that percentage down to single digits, but I don't necessarily think that when one is way below the target, it is better than when one is way above the target. Neither is probably that good, but I am speculating.

BTW, the body fat percentage is universal. Works just fine for young and old, athletes and non-athletes, even muscular ones. You gain, say 8.5 pounds of muscle through some extraordinary body building type weight training, you are allowed to gain 1.5 lb of fat, and still remain at the ideal body fat percentage (if you started from 15%). But, under BMI calculation, gaining 10 lbs is a disaster...
