I agree with most of the comments in your post. It should be possible to vet most of these illegals and get them on a work visa and the tax rolls. That would be a real win-win. In addition, as part of the vetting process, we should deport those that don't meet certain criteria, which would help us cut down on all the fraud and expenditures on folks who are here illegally. I think there is no excuse for us not funding this program.
One thing I'd point out, though, is that I do believe we need to basically make H-1 visas unlimited in the tech industry. Right now, we limit it to something like 200,000 and those are gone in the first week of the year. That's killing the tech industry's ability to bring jobs here, so they go overseas. That's just plain stupid. So we need to actively encourage the world's brains to come here legally through the H-1 visa program.
Next, we also need to realize that we need low end workers as well. There are many jobs Americans simply won't do in large numbers, like landscaping and construction work. We need a fast, legal path for workers to come here legally on the tax rolls. I'd bet 90% or more of these illegal Mexicans would come here legally and would pay their taxes, if we'd just make it fast and easy, and give them a long term path to citizenship. Why can't we do that?
