It's interesting how much focus on this thread there is on performance comparisons of point products. For large organizations, I don't think decisions are being made on a product by product basis. Since networks are increasingly mission critical, vendors are being selected because of their end to end and global support capability.

In essence, CSCO's IOS and IGRP represent the operating system of the network. The interesting thing is that CSCO has a more powerful grip on the enterprise than INTC or MSFT. However, it is in no vendors best interest to admit that. CSCO doesn't want to attract unwanted scrutiny and COMS, BAY, NN, ASND and others would never be willing to admit their second tier position.

A key issue for cisco is NOT product performance versus second tier vendors, it is the growth in the market! Another key issue for cisco is their ability to expand into the much larger voice infrastructure market as it becomes increasingly digital and packet based.
