I see a GOP renewal after the elections, a realization that it has to go to center a bit more if it wishes to be successful in the future.

What would going to the center a bit more mean?

Spend more? Bush spent money hand over fist.

Tax more? That's a stupid game for the GOP to play. Not only is it bad for the country, its also an area where we can't win votes. People who want higher taxes vote for Democrats.

As for social/religious conservatism, the GOP has done almost nothing to move in that direction.

Except for not invading Iraq again... what center is there to move to, that would really be moving towards the center, and that would really pick up votes in substantial numbers? I don't see any.

The problem with the GOP is more about not living up to its principles, than it is about being extreme.

And really the problem with the election isn't a problem with the GOP so much as it is Bush's unpopularity, combined with economic pessimism.
