Relax, Neeka. For all of our fears, I think Obama will govern from the middle. A very smart, cautious man who wants to succeed. We have him down as a wide-eyed radical, but that's not where he will come from.

Smart? yes. Cautious? yes. But from the middle? what middle? You think Reid and Pelosi will be interested in any middle? They will come roaring in from the left. Now, who gets to steer in Washington? Is Obama strong enough to steer events? Who knows? Nothing in his history gives a clue.

For me the metaphor from this campaign was nautical: when the wind is directly from behind you, you can proceed fast & well by just holding steady & doing nothing. Obama did a lot of nothing in this campaign, especially since September, mostly successfully.

But if the wind is in your face, you have to keep tacking. That was McCain's fate.
