Funny....I said almost the same thing to our youngest son last night, an Obama fan, and who doesn't think socialism is "so" bad.....(he is furious about the "Wall Street Bailout" as he calls it, and even more so about the excessive millions of dollars for the CEO's and Wall Street Banking folks....) I reminded him that we all have choices every day....education if the job one has currently to his/her liking (he didn't take advantage of that choice earlier in his life), changing jobs if he didn't like the one he has now (that would be hard right now), and if the company he was working for was a good one, buy stock in it....(need more money to do that....) etc...
He did say one thing that made me think that he might have put his finger on something the "30-40 somthings" may all feel....
He feels there is such a HUGE gap between the "worker" and the "CEO"....that there is no way to get there from "here"...
When I was younger, I knew that if I worked hard, got as much education as I could, that I would do better financially.
What I think we're dealing with is the tables have turned, but this group has only known what is "now..." When they were 15-20 or so, Gates/Allen/Jobs/McCaw/ and all the early tech folks had already started their companies, and were raking in millions of dollars. (Most worked 24/7 too, but somehow that fact gets lost) ....
Now this newly rich group is in their 50's....Some of them are richer than Midas, or any Kings of yore.
Our younger young people see that group, and think that when they work for people who are so wealthy, that they themselves should be paid more money.
As I viewed the hundreds of thousands of people at Obama's night tonight....I came to realize that THAT is part of what we are seeing....The young people all want to feel as if they too can achieve what they see around them.
Problem is, they want to do it NOW. They are much more impatient than we were about the length of time it took to achieve even a modicum of wealth.
Also, if this is truly what may be happening, then of course, they don't realize the folly of socialism. These young people grew up with more material goods than any others in history, but today, they want those goods, and most can't afford them. They pay little taxes now. So what difference does socialism make to them....? None, as far as they are concerned....
It’s going to be an interesting ride for awhile in the future, that's for sure! |
