Following the merger, 3Com, the US$6 billion a year networking company, is now moving into the market for handheld electronic organisers with a product from the stables of USRobotics, a specialist in communications devices.
The PalmPilot, as the company calls its new product, lets people on the move access their schedule, contacts and addresses, expense accounts, and retrieve and compose e-mail, with just four buttons and a touch screen pen.
Because of its simple operations, the company claimed that in a single year in the United States, it has captured a 71 per cent market share.
Hoping to emulate that success, 3Com Asia Ltd (Malaysia) yesterday held a Press preview of the PalmPilot in Petaling Jaya, where two models, for professional users and personal users, were presented.
Weighing only 5.7 ounces including two AAA-size batteries, it has one megabyte of memory or room for about 4,000 addresses, four years of appointments, 750 to-do items, 750 memos, and 100 e-mail messages.
The PalmPilot will be officially launched at the Networks '97 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur from Thursday to Saturday. |
