NEWS ALERT
from The Wall Street Journal

Nov. 5, 2008

Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman won re-election to the U.S. Senate, fending off a challenge from former comedian and talk radio host Al Franken, according to the Associated Press.

So far, Democrats have picked up five Senate seats and retained one, increasing their majority to 54, with the outcome of races in Alaska, Georgia and Oregon yet to be determined. The Democrats have also won Senate races in Virginia, with ex-Gov. Mark Warner projected as the winner; in New Mexico, with Rep. Tom Udall called as the victor; and in Colorado, where Tom Udall's cousin, Rep. Mark Udall, was projected as the winner by the Associated Press.

One bright spot for Republicans was in Kentucky, where Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell hung on to his seat against Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford, a wealthy businessman, according to CNN and MSNBC.
