Palin was an unmitigated disaster for the Republican ticket. The turning point in the presidential campaign coincided with Palin’s interview with Couric, where Palin came across—even to many diehard conservatives—as utterly clueless.

When the financial crisis became the central issue in the campaign shortly thereafter, it placed a premium on seriousness, which is exactly what Palin lacked.
