Someone has to get their act together for the 2010 midterms

This is true to gain back the White House or a majority in the Senate/House but a smaller comeback is not out of the question. The mid-terms are usually a referendum on the President, so much will depend on Obama's execution and ability to avoid over reaching.

However, to truly get back into power, the Republican party is going to need to rethink their message. As you say, the demographics are not with the Palin wing of the party. I was happy with the nomination of McCain, but actually the long-term interests of moderates in the Republican party would have been better served by the nomination of somebody that the base was happy with....they would have been wiped out and there would have been no confusion about the message from the electorate.
