But we have seen pretty clearly that a zealous conservative movement will not create a sustainable governing majority, just like a zealous progressive movement would eventually fail too.

Perhaps the most effective thing for the GOP would be to bide its time and wait for the progressives to overplay their hand. I keep hoping that won't happen and we'll find a harmonious center, but history and the psychology of power tell us otherwise.
