I suppose it is time again to clarify definitions. I divide the world into two groups - those who want to grow government control and influence at the expense of individual liberty are lefty. Those who stand in the tide and cry ENOUGH are righty. The people you mention are absolutely leftys. The republican party (judged by what they did with power, not their platform) is lefty. Unlike wealth, power is a pie of fixed size. If government grabs more, individuals loose. Citizens are about to loose a big chunk of pie.
