The question I saw polled often was, which side do you think ran the more negative campaign? That one came out with McCain ahead in the last month. I don't know if it was exit-polled or not.

In general, McCain tried to make the campaign a referendum on Obama's unacceptability, while Obama had already convinced a majority that not only was he acceptable, his ideas and personal style were preferable.
