That was certainly part of it. If the Republicans are spending like crazy and otherwise expanding government, there isn't much point for fiscal conservatives, and libertarians to come out to support the Republicans (except maybe as the lesser of two evils, and even that arguments gets weakened, both directly by the idea that they aren't the lesser of two evils for such people, and indirectly by the idea that if you reward Republicans for expanding government then there won't be any break on government expansion)


It is the social meddling in people's lives that did them in.


Social meddling by government is moving away from limited government. If it increases that is a form of government expansion.

Also I think you strongly overrepresent the amount of such meddling (at least the amount it increased, arguably it didn't increase at all), and the extent it was a factor in the election.

their ridiculous position on stem cell research

Funding stem cell research with tax dollars is, to the extent its a change in the level of meddling in social areas at all, an INCREASE in social meddling.
