Intel integrated a CPU, Graphics controller and memory controller earlier this decade. It's name was Timna and I provided Intel with engineering services in Haifa Israel. It was an excellent product however problems with the external SDRAM interface chip called MTH caused it to miss the market window. It worked just fine with RamBus but you know how that went.

So AMD is simply trying to catch up with what Intel was doing back in 2000.
