I hope they keep pounding the drum loudly for the radical socialists and evil corrupt media and all that. It will marginalize the yahoos completely while Obama gets on with the business of building a real governing coalition.

And if/when he succeeds, the screamers on the fringes will be the kids with their noses pressed to the glass of the candy store window, with all the goodies they wanted completely out of reach.

The road to power goes through suburban soccer moms in swing states, not the red meat base.

Some tidbits from the exit polls Tuesday. Obama took the 18-29 vote 66-32 while McCain's only age group win was 65+. How many 20-somethings will be open to crazed winger appeals? He won independents 52-44; since Indies made up 29% of the voters, that edge was worth 2% of his final 6% winning edge. Again, how many independents will be open to screaming rants from the right and change their minds next time?

When they pitch the question by "ideology" Obama won moderates 60-39 and even took 20% of conservatives while McCain only won 10% of liberals. Will those 20% change their vote next time for somone who is a true winger bomb-thrower type? I suspect they might opt for a true small government advocate, but events are going to keep the US government role very large for a long time to come. It sounds like a certain percentage of conservatives want a well-run government, if they have to tolerate one.

First-time voters went for Obama 69-30. Chances are they will be repeat Obama voters too. He already passed their acceptability threshold.
