I'm sure Joe had total faith that his guy McCain would win, and he would get his Cabinet job at DHS or maybe even the Pentagon. Politicians caught up in a crusade often can't contemplate any other outcome except victory. Defeat comes as a violent shock. Joe has a long way to go to earn his way back into the good graces of the party caucus. If he truly cherishes his independent status, he should get used to the level of influence that goes with it.
