When I was a kid, fire rations were left over C-Rats from the war. They had a little pack of four cigarettes in them.

Later, they took the cigarettes out, but they left the little chewing gum in and always the can opener.

One of my earliest jobs was making up fire packs, which included six C-Rats, a shovel, and pulaski, a flashlight, and a canvas manty or manta. We were expected to use the manty to sleep in. Later, they added paper sleeping bags. One fire I was on for two days ended in two inches of snow, so we just buried our wet paper bags and walked out to the Lolo Trail for a pickup.

I could still make up a fire pack today, given the component ingredients. One variation was a fire pack that had a crosscut saw instead of a pulaski. Those things are pretty big and unwieldy, but I know how to wrap them around the pack in a compact bundle.
