It sounds like you were poorly taught by your particular church and never connected with God. There's tremendous variation in how churches lead and nurture their congregations. I would also run away from anything that made me feel guilty and oppressed. I also wish they would show the same respect. Is this directed at me? Have I shown disrespect for you choosing a non-religious life? Or are you speaking in general.
