Who knows.. Maybe one day there will be an act of modern day Alchemy, such as was experienced with the first artificial diamonds. Gold has already been artificially synthesized in a nuclear reactor:

So, for the sake of theoretical argument, let's say there some kind of breakthrough in the inexpensive transmutation of elements into a noble metal like gold, how would that alter your perspective of the value of gold as a storehouse of value?

Would that not be the same as a "printing press"?
