I lived in some countries in the 90's that still had limited trading on Sundays; if you realized you needed something after noon or 1PM, your only option was a convenience store-type place. And if they didn't have a usable substitute, you were SOL until the next day. Most of those places have scrapped those laws now, very sensibly.
