”Why are so many people you talk to liars?”

I can’t speak for other individuals but speaking for myself it has long been my habit on SI to confront posters who are deceitful or conducting themselves in an unjust manner. Not all posters who I engage are dishonorable liars. As you know, or should know by now, I also engage in reasoned dialogue around philosophical ideas or interesting news developments with other posters who are interested in thoughtful discussion or in expanding their awareness about existence.

Although I can’t speak for individual circumstance, even yours, I do understand in general how people become liars. They begin with small deceits, what we usually call ‘white lies’ they see as useful or even helpful in getting past a difficult circumstance they’d rather not confront. Often times this is even modeled and encouraged by care givers. Gradually the line between honesty and what is good and right becomes blurred until lying begins to feel normal. Then the person finds it more comfortable to deceive others than to be honest and in most cases they are able to convince themselves there is no real practical difference. They don’t see themselves as cowardly or weak; they actually believe lying is a way to out wit other people … and so the lie becomes a lie even unto themselves. At this point they/you are by the nature of your character a liar.
