Hello Chuck

You may find this site interesting. Especially the mineral exploration section.

sts.gsc.nrcan.gc.ca

There is a discussion of ice directions preliminary established six years ago in a broad context from the Winter Lake, Lac de Gras, Alymer Lake areas. More detailed work has since been done indicating 9 directions, but it is not displayed on this site as yet.

Take a look at the Kirkland Lake and Flin Flon sections. There are quite detailed glacial flow maps indicating approximately 8 different ice ages with 8 regional and locally differential directions.

The Introduction and pipe erosion graphic from the Kirkland Lake section is quite interesting showing the erosion differential between the Lac de Gras (NWT), Kirkland Lake (Ontario) and Somerset Island (NWT) pipes, the latter having been eroded completely down to their root zones presumably partially due to the fact that they are intruded into dolomites, conglomerates, limstones, etc.

You may also note that in the case of pipes which have been studied in detail for fifteen years in the Kirkland Lake area, there is a considerable degree of erosion differentiation with some having been almost completely eroded while others are reasonably intact.

This may be due to the softness (graywacke, conglomerate) of some host rock such as at Diamond Lake and the hardness (andesite and granite) at others.

Just the facts, no hype.

Regards
