Do you have the text to the consent decree? I'm wondering whether Microsoft violated the terms, but the Microsoft thread doesn't seem to have a pointer to it anywhere. There are implications for Intel. If Microsoft has to freeze OS development, then they'll raise the price of the OS and use the windfall to finance losses in add-ons like browsers. Software will consume a geater portion of overall system cost than hardware. Intel makes twice as much as Microsoft today, but that might change in the future. This is happening already. After Windows 98, Microsoft will move everyone towards WinNT and the much higher price. The days of the cheap OS will be over and a lot of innovation will be stifled, slowing hardware sales. It's going to be especially important after Merced is released to have continuing innovation in software to sell hardware.
