"Why does the idea of civil rights not apply to gays and lesbians? "

It does. I agree that adult committed partners, living a carnal lifestyle, should not be descriminated against because of other identifying features and that the law should ensure the equal treatment with regards to legal issues like hospital visitations, insurance, inheritance etc. It appears that the effort is being made to position 'civil unions' and 'marriage' as equal in the eyes of the law, while different in how they identify the relationship.

Marriage is a term. A rose is a rose, by any other name, it is still a rose. A tulip however is not a rose. As flowers, roses and tulips have many similarities but we don't deny the rose it's distinction in the system of classification of things, nor do we deny the tulip.

The term marriage has been used historically to classify a certain type of human relationship which, although quite similar to many other human relationships, is not identical to gay and lesbian relationships.

Why do you insist upon denying the people who are traditionally classified as 'Married' their distinction in our system of classifying things? Are you suggesting they do not have that right?
