MM: Wow. Are you an atheist? I believe that there are issues in which there is a fairly clear right and wrong. For example, murder is wrong. Slavery is wrong. Rape is wrong. Vinter: What I am is irrelevant. What is relevant is how/ what we debate about relates to the legal construct of a society that exists in our culture/country. Your opinion of murder, slavery, and rape as being wrong is only correct insofar as the laws we have made as a society say they are wrong. MM: So are you saying those issues are really only wrong, if society votes on it and the majority say its wrong? Vinter: In this country--yes--unless the federal constitution has said it is an individual right. MM: Democracy and majority rule aren't the only guiding lights humanity needs to build an enlightened civilization. Vinter: The laws that America has chosen have come from other "guiding lights" as you term it---at least that is what the history I have read teaches me. In the common definition of enlightened as you are using it I do agree with your last statement.
