A better idea would be to break the UAW's stranglehold on Detroit, et al. German, Japanese and Korean automakers with plants in the South and California have unions but with limited powers.

What other company (GM) gives 6 weeks vacation the minute you're hired, instead of earning it and full health benefits instead of waiting the usual 90 days to qualify? And GM, for instance, closes down 6 weeks every year to re-tool - add that to their 6 week vacation and their off 3 months of the year. If a worker is fired, they not only get unchallenged unemployment, but the UAW provides up to 90% of what they were making.

With all the union demands and the government rules, it's hardly surprising the auto industry is having problems - it's been coming on for years. Unless something is done about the unions, bailouts won't help.
