"What do you think about bailing out the auto industry?"

With the current management?

No.

Even with new management, the union contracts need to be adjusted. The biggest thing needed is a change in culture, otherwise it won't make much difference.

The problem with a bailout of any type is where does it all stop? And, quite frankly, the changes that need to be made probably can't be outside of bankruptcy. The auto companies need to be totally restructured and streamlined. If we bail them out, then the terms is the game has got to be changed.

I've often toyed with the idea that manufacturing needs to be separated from design. The really great cars are usually the vision of one man, but you can't have that with a vertically integrated company like the US car manufacturers. However, if the ideas behind GM's AUTOnomy project are adopted, then that changes.

The current car companies become OEMs. They produce the skateboards which are power plant independent. The auto companies produce them in various sizes and capabilities. Design houses then take them and produce the bodies which hook onto the skateboards. They can be anything from handmade luxury ones with top quality components to cheap mass produced ones. The finished cars then are sold into an independent dealer network. This lets everyone focus on the things they do the best and let others do what they do best.
