Let me pose a question.

Suppose I acquire widgets at a cost of $100,000, but haven't paid for them yet. Then, the next day, I sell them for $75,000, generating a $25,000 net loss on the transaction. Still haven't paid for them. Yet, I have $75,000 cash in the bank.

Do I have a $75,000 "surplus"?
