Drawing from your community IS your panel of peers. That's the venire in the first instance.

The courts control discrimination by requiring the lawyers to articulate the reasons for their peremptory challenges if it appears that certain ethnic groups, for example, are being systematically rejected. In CA, it's called a Wheeler motion.

Many cases are won on jury selection. I had a case in Orange County a number of years ago against a very high powered opponent (for the plaintiffs). He used jury consultants to select the jury, but once the jury was seated, he didn't like the looks of the panel. We settled before opening statements for an amount he had previously rejected.
