Chinese retail spending was up 22 percent through October. As a percent of GDP, consumer spending is still only about one-half of what it is in developed countries.

With the recently announced stimulus package and new emphasis on pushing up personal incomes, consumerism in China is likely to lift the rest of the world out of the present financial crisis (eventually anyway).

Further out, I go back to what the World Wildlife Fund had to say earlier this year. "At the present rate of growth, China in twenty years will be consuming all the natural resources on the planet." Even if they are exaggerating, the implication for raw materials prices is staggering.
