Agreed, we can't look at a realignment beyond 8-12 years if that long. Successful political movements tend to burn out after a while and spoil the party brand. Reagan could not have succeeded as much as he did without the Carter legacy to compare to, then Mondale to run against. But his movement was exhausted by 1992.

I still think the Republicans are some years away from getting their act together and finding a standard bearer who can present a better campaign. Palin is not that leader.
