It seems to me that there might be a lot more potential for a break through design in this area. (Unlike the solar panel area.)

The vertical egg beater design was an interesting attempt. I've skimmed through a couple of books on the subject. It's quite interesting the pros and cons of each design. My guess is someone will figure it out, just as we figured out how to exceed the speed of sound.

especially the gearbox and generator!

One would think that geared transmission would help here. I'm thinking that if bicycles can shift automatically then why not windmills?

The torque forces have to be unreal on some of those biggies, not to mention harmonic feedback loops.
