In Florida a Blue Cross Blue Shield group policy for a 60-year old woman costs $14,100 annually, and this is a policy with deductibles and co-payments.

The one thing keeping many afloat in Hawaii is mandatory coverage for workers working over 20 hours per week. Costco, Home Depot etc start at $14/hr but most working there are there for the free medical. Figure medical for a family of three is about $900.mo. But you have to pay taxes first and Hawaii is about a 45% tax rate when you throw in Fed and State. That means an independent business person must earn about $1,600-$1,700/month in order to pay for the medical. But, the big IF is IF you can even get medical. Any pre-existing conditions? then no soup for you!

The medical at Costco adds another 20k in bennies, which many would say are necessary bennies to the $14/hour.

There is a huge wave of middle aged folks taking 'secure' P/T and F/T employment just to get the medical here.
