It's much too simplistic to equate reality-based vs unreality-based with educated vs. not imo. A lot of what you talking about is really encompassed in the notions of common sense and grounding in something, which need not be books. It could be farming or construction work. People who are grounded in something are less likely to swoon over images than the college educated, whose training elevates the importance of symbols.

Many of the people who noticed that Obama was more style than substance were not highly educated in terms of degrees. The highly educated, by and large, swooned at Obama's magnificent manipulation of symbols.

But then, the difference between sense and education would be lost on Chris Hedges, who as a reporter was not above inventing fictions that fit his symbolic framework. Cf. "Gaza Diary"
