What may be going on, goes back to Buchanan's idea about the Republican's kissing their asses goodby if they do not back the auto bailout, e.g.

If the congress does not enact a bailout, then the pressure goes back to bush to do soemthing and if bush does nothing, then the dems can blame the Republcians. Then when Obama gets in, he and the dems will take over the auto companies and restructure them to their liking.

DEms become heros and the Republicans are relegated to the dust bin of history, where they belong.
