Quicken and Street Atlas for Solaris

Sounds like a question to ask Intuit and Rand McNally, no? Presumably they would produce such products if there were demand for them. Or do you suppose they should be compelled to produce them even if they'll lose money because nobody wants them?

What people confuse is the difference between a monopoly and a standard. A monopoly is what existed with AT&T before the breakup. If you wanted phone service there was only one place to go and it was in fact illegal to try and compete with them for a long time. A standard is simply an expression of marketing success. Nobody held a gun to the public's head and forced the 2+ million downloads of IE 4.0 which have occurred since its release. There is nothing to stop CPQ, DELL, or any other PC vendor from deciding to offer OS/2 or Solaris preloaded on their systems. Why don't they do so? The answer is simple: there is no demand for such systems.

"Consumer Choice" is not something made by State Planning Commissions, it is a reflection of the actual buying patterns of the market. If you don't want a Windows PC, don't buy one. It's that simple. Buy a Mac. Run Linux. Run OS/2.

What's stopping you? What compells you to chose MSFT products?
