"I'm really referring to the tax added to items and services"

There are many types of "consumption taxes".....

A simple Sales Tax is a tax on consumption (& a form of taxation that most Americans are familiar with because so many States and localities use them --- and get pissed whenever anyone suggest that the feds might want to horn-in on their turf).

But a Value-Added Tax (such as Europe, Canada, etc.) usually becomes a mind-numbingly complicated beast --- with different amounts of tax accessed at each level of production, and in different amounts on different goods.

Bureaucrats LOVE them.

Might want to call the V.A.T. a lifetime guarantee of work for bureaucrats....
