My proposal to solve the US financial and automaker crisis:
The government needs an innovative, creative, long-term solution to the energy problem.
So, go ahead and loan, bail-out, or restructure the big three, but nationalize them so we can control them, and benefit from any profits in the future.
Get rid of the oil lobbyists, for they'll fight like hell to block the next part of my proposal.
Get Silicon Valley idealist-entrepreneur-capitalists together with Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Boone Pickens, and Obama's "Secretary of Technology" and build an energy infrastructure that incorporates coal, wind, solar, nuclear, and fossil fuel as interchangeable energy sources for a nationwide electric grid.
Then build the grid, put the best minds into making the best rechargeable batteries, and retool Detroit to produce electric cars.
At the same time look ahead to hydrogen fuel cell technology as the next step a few years' out.
OK, I've created new jobs for a million people or so, kept the automakers in business, and put the US in the lead to combat global warming.
