A big diff between the airlines and the auto industry fro the consumer is the life cycle of the product. If an airline goes BK and maintains operations a consumer really only loses one booked flight or perhaps becomes uneasy about booking another. In the auto industry, if a company goes BK who will buy any car from them? What good is a 5 year warranty from a company in Chapter 11? Can you get parts, service?

I don't think any bailout of the American Big Three will change their thinking on car making, so any bailout would be a finger in the cracked dam.
