Really, I never would have made it as a smoke jumper. The physical requirements are pretty stiff.

I've worked with jumpers on fires and on projects during slow fire years. Most of them are great people, though some are a little (understandably) arrogant.

Last Friday I had lunch with a very old friend who was a fire guard at Elk Summit the year I was on Diablo Lookout (1962). He later became a smoke jumper.

As it happens, we are exactly the same age. I guess by comparison I weathered well because I'm quite sure I could outwalk him now.
