this is a case where the new 58 democratic member senate would have made a difference. The current slim majority democratic senate can't get an automaker bailout through, but if they had 58 or 60 dem members they probably could, assuming some republicans from the rust belt voted with the dems.

The west coast senators are getting strong no votes from their constituencies for this I am certain, even though the west coast is sensitive to labor typically. Thats probably 2 or 3 votes from CA and OR that aren't going to come through for an auto bailout and they need EVERY dem to vote for it.
