Of course not all gay people, or even all gay people who push the "gay marriage" on other similar political ideas, are activists or support the activists.

In theory whether you think a political movement should succeed, should depend more on the issues than the personalities pushing the issues. (For example I don't think the pro-life cause is discredited by clinic bombers, or would be theocrats), but in practice what the supporters of an idea do, and how they act, will effect opinions about that idea. That's just human nature. One might try to limit the effect. I think I make that effort. But it isn't going to be zero, and I'm not sure I'd even argue that it always should be zero, just that it shouldn't be definitive.
