The real problem with it is the retroactive re-definition of the term "married", IMO. I don't think most people liberal or conservative, are freaking out about gays doing whatever they want to.

But there are hundreds of years of statute, case law, and common law on the books that rely on the definition of a marriage as being between one man and one woman. When you redefine it as being between two men, two women, or one man and one sheep, or whatever, there are going to be unintended consequences -- you are going to retroactively change the meanings of thousands of court decisions over the years by putting in a variable the courts never considered, same with legislation, and the same with the definitions set out by common law. It makes no sense.

Call it a civil union but give it the INTENDED consequences you want it to have. While there will be opposition, the support for the arrangement would be overwhelming.

I just think most people today have the good sense to recognize that if you're going to have these things, you need a word that distinguishes between a "marriage" involving one man and one woman versus a gay marriage. They aren't the same thing, much as the homos want to claim it is.
