Regarding government funding of lithography: This excerpt is taken from an overview of the DARPA Advanced Lithography program. Commitment to advances in this technology is made in recognition of the military benefits derived from the use of semiconductors in essentially all defense products. The development of smaller lighter computer components manufactured through lithographic processes offers opportunities for replacing obsolete equipment in a variety of military systems. New opportunities exist with the advent of the digital soldier who requires mobility and faster transmission of information to improve survivability, situational awareness, and lethality.
