The CAFE standards only apply to new car sales, not to used cares.

I think some people are missing the point. It's energy consumption that we need to cut, not car types.

There are cases where the Escalade is the most efficient mode of transport - where one Escalade is used instead of a small car and a small truck to get people and things from Point A to Point B.

The thing to do is to Tax fuel use so that the right signals are sent to consumers. If you buy a house in the fringe suburbs and commute 120 miles per day in your Honda Insight you use a lot more gas than the guy who drives an Escalade 8 miles per day because he bought a smaller house that's very close to work.

Don't apply the measures to cars if what you want to affect is fuel use - apply measures to fuel use.
