Hi, regarding using drones, many are restricted by their communications range to the first relay. Also they depend on detection techniques that don't always work well over water, especially on wooden vessels and/or are not groomed for over water work

It really takes a man/decision on the spot to decide. is it a harmless fishing vessel or a pirate vessel? They frequently look the same.

One of the best things to keep pirates off is the placing of fire hoses directed alongside the vessel hull and turned on full blast.

In the Malacca Straights they have been known to string a long line between two speedboats than allow the bow of the vessel to catch the line. The two speedboats get pulled alongside the vessel and they can cut their engines and climb up the side.
